Writer

I am a writer of children's books, short stories and most recently my first screenplay 'In Parallel'. Additionally I am working on my first novel, an exploration of multiculturalism in a braided narrative of past and present.

When writing for children I focus on representation of marginalized groups and highlighting family structures outside the status quo. Most importantly, I do this without making it the centre of the story, it is simply for children to see themselves and their families reflected in early childhood literature.

Excerpts From Short Stories

THE HIMALAYAS

It’s a brisk morning, unusual for the typically humid Nepalese weather. For once, it’s comfortable being outside, but it has yet to hit 8 am and the heat will surely reach the mountains in the next few hours. The only sounds are the wind in the trees, the sweet music of the wind chimes from the little market down the dirt road, and the occasional contented moo of cows grazing nearby.
I sit barefoot and cross-legged, the grass slightly damp beneath my shorts, close to my favourite cow (who I’ve aptly named Milky). Milky and I have developed a comfortable bond over the past three weeks – ever since I started meditating here each morning. I feed her some hay, and she swats mosquitos away from me with her tail – what I can only assume is a declaration of love in cow world. Her fellow cows graze nearby, embodying the mindfulness I am seeking. The Himalayas form a beautiful backdrop of serenity to engage in empty thoughts. The mountains are painted on the clearest of blue skies and surrounded by trees larger and more vibrantly green than I’ve ever seen. But none of it feels overwhelming. It feels calm. It feels like mine.
As I settle into meditation, I focus on letting go of my thoughts. This hasn’t been easy – I tend to dwell in my head more than my heart. Over the past few weeks, life in the mountains has helped me embrace a slower pace, but today my mind is restless, scrambled by the phone call I received in the quiet of the night
.

FAIR IS FOUL, AND FOUL IS FAIR
”Out, out brief candle! Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more: it is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.”
My favourite quote goes through my head at 5.31 AM. I’m absolutely freezing as I’m waiting for a train in the middle of fucking High Barnet (yes, it is indeed the end of the Northern Line and yes you could argue that it’s barely in London). The warmth of thousands sweaty, stressed-out bodies has not yet heated up the underground station, so my breath is depressingly visible.
Once again, I got out of bed at a godforsaken hour in pursuit of yet another part, in yet another play, alongside yet another herd of hopeful souls, that would all have their hopes crushed by the end of the day. The part I should be auditioning for is as one of the witches in an actual West-End production of Macbeth. Although, I’m actually auditioning for Macbeth herself, the part that I was born to play. After I starred in an avant-garde off-West-End production as Macbeth, I’m definitely experienced enough for them to cast me - a woman - for the lead role in this notorious Shakespeare play. I got this in the bag, the reviews from the last show speak for themselves.

I recognize that I live and work on the stolen lands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. Working from a world-wide anti-colonial standpoint is essential to my work in order to build bridges and attempt to heal some of the wounds that have been caused by colonizing settlers. Furthermore, I strive to highlight Indigenous voices in all the work I do, as well as honour the land that they have kept safe since time immemorial.
